21st Century Paintings With New Media Subject Matter: After 2002

In the late 90s WA became increasingly interested in ways computers and digital technology were influencing art, ideas and culture. From 2000-2002 she was more involved with new media projects than painting. The paintings after 2002 emerged in relation to new media in several ways. Most obviously the images revolved around new media ideas. Also, the use of a digital camera to record the process of the paintings facilitated web slide shows that reveal the process of making paintings.

The Anatomy of Paintings

A digital camera enabled maintaining a visual record of the paintings in stages of development. The shots capture many of the layers that exist beneath the surface of a painting. Some of the digital images are edited into web slide shows that reveal the way the paintings emerge. The common, yet previously non existent, devices of digital cameras and the internet allow non-painters a glimpse into the process of how these paintings take form.

The Adventures of Sysuphrus and other paintings

In the 1990s Wendy Angel lived in California, Hawaii and Israel. At the end of the decade her interest in computers and the internet expanded. There is an assortment of paintings that were scattered through the decade. These are paintings worked on outside clear studio locations or time periods.

The Aleph-Bet Paintings:
Paintings of Letters of the Hebrew Alphabet

This series of twenty-two oils on board. These paintings were not painted one after the other, rather all 22 paintings were worked on together throughout the span of almost three years. The Aleph-bet paintings were done in the time between being an artist-in-residence in Israel and indulging in New Media art in the silicone valley. Both alphabetical writing and digital information systems transformed the way people communicate and process information. In this they also changed the way the human mind is formatted.

Environmental Abstractions Primary Concept: Paintings as Manifestation of Consciousness

The space of the paintings, the space of the outside world and the space of the artists mind/body converge. The paintings exist as a record of this event or experience.

Pacific Grove, California 1992-1994

After Maui and before Arad was a prolific period a Pacific Grove studio. These relate to the paintings of Maui and Arad in being focused on the idea of paintings as environments.
